Yogi Tea and LEED Certification

The tea industry and many tea companies, big and small are not only explorers and participants in the area of sustainability, they are also leaders in the ideas of going and being “green” and crusading for fair-trade businesses.

What’s more, the majority of people who are regular tea drinkers are also looking for more diverse and sustainable tea businesses as they themselves are health conscious. Tea drinkers ask of themselves to be more conscious and make better decisions on their consumption, they are apt to be frequent consumers of those companies that exhibit the green, fair-trade, and sustainable culture.

In the past, we have discussed the certification and requirements of the fair-trade industry part of tea, for example the fair wages paid to those for their work, the true clean growth process and harvesting of tea and the guidelines that companies would meet in order to get certified and earn the seal from the United States. Many more companies have discovered ways to enhance their tea plantations, by taking care of their lands with the natural growth of plantings that ward off pests that kill the tea crops, this to lessen the usage of pesticides, or by doing specific types of landscaping ideas to help indigenous animals grow and prosper and roam on other parts of the plantation without injury to the tea farm itself.

Expanding on these ideas and adding in, even more, comes the Yogi Tea Company. This company will become the very first LEED Certified Company in the United States!

What is LEED Certified?

LEED stands for leadership in energy and environment. According to World Tea News, “LEED Certification is not only about the impact to the environment, its surroundings, and animal life, but it is about the people in the building in terms of toxic leaching and other things”. In other words, it is about the environment of the land the business is on, its sustainability and its impact there and then the building itself and the conditions and impact inside as well; with the employees in mind.

Why is LEED important?

To a business like Yogi Tea, it is important because they have a vision of green sustainability for their tea; they feel their mindset as a business is the same. So overall, they would like their tea and their tea business to be “green” from the start, during and to the finish. The move for Yogi Tea to be LEED Certified will help other businesses see how they too may become LEED Certified and the impact for all of us is only better for the areas in which these companies will reside.

A LEED Certified business will exemplify sustainability as it will be a business that will conserve energy resources, as well as produce less waste. This will lessen the carbon footprint overall. There are four levels of LEED and it is globally recognized. LEED will set the standards for all “green” facilities. LEED is also about the health and welfare of its employees. It will have access to healthy work habit ideas and methods and areas of manufacturing standards of operation that will benefit the workers’ health-wise, it will be cost-efficient and the interior areas will also be environmentally sound.

For Yogi Tea in particular, the LEED-certified facility will take their tea processing to another level. For Yogi Tea, in particular, the building has been built around the flow of tea itself.

Yogi Tea harvests, processes, and sells fifty (50) different kinds of tea, and they have over one hundred fifty (150) types of herbs and spices from around the world. They types of machines, to the types of equipment and packaging, will become “green”. The building will be 108,000 square foot; it will cost 21 million dollars and be made of 81% recycled structural steel.

Other things listed about this new building and its landscape is it will minimize pollution, waste and heat impact, capture about 90% of storm runoff and all plantings will be drought tolerant. For the inside and for the employees it will be more efficient for its product testing, the lunch room will have marketplace vending, the locker rooms will have showers, they will have comfortable employee collaboration interaction areas,year-round natural light will flood the facility, and indoor bicycle parking will be available.

One could say that with Yogi Tea having the very first LEED Certification they are leading the way.
